Yeah my last 4th gen was lowered on 17's, you can see pics on my old profile thread - http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/profile ... 14660.html

Depends on width and offset.
I ran 18's on my 4ws 4th gen for a few years when I first had it with zero issues

Yep, fine. Somewhere in my thread (sig) there is a bit about the specific size/offset etc of mine, if that helps.

What does it do to the driving experience, running on these? Does it sharpen the steering a lot, and/or spoil the smoothness of the ride?

Depends on the sum of the parts - I run 215 45 17 tyres so my speedo is spot on, bus as you've got more wheel and less tyre than standard, you get a firmer more positive ride. I don't have any major issues with tram lining and I certainly don't find it uncomfortable.
17's are a popular choice on 4th gens, 16's are great but you generally have less tyre choice.

I much prefer the 16's on my 4th gen. The 17's felt like they were compromising the car, could have been down to offset and tyre choice though.

Depends on many factors including weight too. I run 17s on my 5th gen drives great but tyre is key. 215/45/17 is the tyre to go for if 17s.

4th gen & 5th gen both apply.
