ABS Sensors 4th gen

Post by DanishLuder » Mon Nov 19, 2018 2:10 pm

Can ABS sensors for the 4th gen prelude be used in differnent places? For example, can I use a Front right ABS Sensor in the rear left? - Will it still work?

Left to right works ok, not sure about front to rear. If it mounts up, it'll probably work ok.

Mounting is different, length is different.

May I ask, how did you work out which ABS sensor was faulty? I have an ABS warning on the dash, and although I know there's probably a plug-in to get the ECU to tell me the failing sensor I cannot for the life of me remember what it is?

I've discovered these codes, and the procedure of using the pin to jump two wires:

1 Hydraulic pump motor over-run (contact BBA)
1-2 Hydraulic pump motor (contact BBA)
1-3 High pressure leak (possibly modulator)
1-4 Pressure switch (contact BBA)
1-8 Pressure accumulator
2-1 Handbrake warning lamp switch circuit faulty
3-1 Right hand front rotor damage
3-2 Left hand front rotor damage
3-4 Right hand rear rotor damage
3-8 Left hand rear rotor damage
3-12 Different tyre sizes fitted
4-1 Right hand front wheel sensor
4-2 Left hand front wheel sensor
4-4 Right hand rear wheel sensor
4-8 Left hand rear wheel sensor
5-4 Right hand rear wheel lock
5-8 Left hand rear wheel lock
6-1 Front fail safe relay
6-4 Rear fail safe relay
7-1 Right hand front modulator solenoid valve
7-2 Left hand front modulator solenoid valve
8-1 ABS operation fault
8-2 Electronic control unit (ECU) fault
8-4 Electronic control unit (ECU) - internal circuit fault

Are these codes still correct, the info came off an American forum, for an Si, but I'd guess they'd be consistent across the entire 4th gen range?

Simply jumping the 2-pin Connecter behind the drivers side, middle console panel, in my case. RHD will be passenger side then?
Then just count the amount of times the error blinks, and you have your error code. Long blinks are 10,20,30 and so on, short is 1,2,3 and etc.

They seem to be correct. I used this chart to pinpoint my error.

Fault codes are the same across all 4g's, whether EUDM/USDM/JDM

The full details of how to get the codes and what they all are, are in the oem service manual, which can be downloaded for free (there was a link in the wiki on the previous version of the forum, not sure how the hero @indigolemon is getting on with fully populating those links in the new Knowledge Base now?)

The codes lists are hosted on our forum in the new Knowledge Base though;
Knowledge Base - ABS Error Codes
You can also just bell them out with a multi meter individually at the connectors to confirm which ones are faulty, but these means scrabbling about on the car unnecessarily when you can just get the codes from the ECU :)

As said previously, you can swap sensors left-right, but not front-back (the lengths are too different I think).

To swap them left/right you will need to unpick the metal brackets that carry/shield the cables off your old and new sensors and swap them over (carefully, to make sure you don't damage the cables). It means changing the bends in the cables (against the 'memory' of the cable) so it's not stress free on the cable, but seems to work ok.

Awesome! I'll be sure to remember this when I go about getting a new sensor. Thanks Wurly!

I presume you can use the 2ws ABS sensors on the 4ws versions, they look identical?
