4WS light keeps coming on (already tried resetting it)

Post by chris_rd92 » Fri Jul 19, 2019 12:21 am

Hi guys,

So I've had my 5g for just over a week now, and the 4WS is already playing up. I noticed the light came on today on the way home, so when I got home I consulted google and found the guide on how to reset the 4WS with the paperclip method. I followed the steps and it all seemed to work perfectly; it flashed twice when I was done, and then when I started the car up the light went off as it should. testing the steering showed the rear wheels turning like normal. Excellent... But then when heading out this evening to go visit some mates, as I left the driveway I noticed the light was back on again...

Is this just a case of resetting it over and over until it stays off? Or is something else wrong? There are no other symptoms from the 4WS; when it's working, it works perfectly.

Hope someone can shed some light on the subject.

Cheers
Chris

It might be worth checking what the code is by using the paperclip method and counting the flashes.

From what you are saying having reset at a stand still not a problem then when you have moved it has read an error so would probably make the assumption of a possible ABS sensor fault.

It could be a sensor somewhere, or even the ecu, as per the previous post you will need to count the flashes and refer to the guide. On one of my previous 4th gens the light would come on like clockwork every 50 miles or so, very annoying. Turned out it was the ecu so I just left it, I only picked the car up for 800 quid so was not that bothered, I would definitely try and get it sorted if you can though. The other option is to do a 2ws conversion.

Just done the paperclip test again and checked the amount of flashes. It seems to do two slow flashes and that's it. That would suggest error code 20 right? Can anyone tell me what that means?

Yeah seems to be. Where is this located? Is it something I can fix myself?

I had the same problem a few years ago and it turned out to be the offisde steering angle sensor. I took it to a guy who was on the forum (Evildmen) and he changed it over in about 20 minutes and we were also having a chat during that time.

If you can do DIY then its worth changing yourself. I'm sure there will be a you tube video on it somewhere.

Ah right cool, yeah I know how to handle my spanners so I'm confident I can do most things! YouTube isn't turning much up unfortunately :/

@chris_rd92 - just about to head into a meeting and have had a quick look for you. Not sure if these are helpful or not as I haven't had a chance to look. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly.

easy enough to do if you can find one spare in order to replace - Ranj has added the manual on how to do it. Keep us posted.
