Power steering bracket help

Post by stinkypaul » Tue Oct 08, 2019 12:17 am

Can anyone help me figure out where I'm going wrong please with the power steering pump. The adjuster tensioner bracket doesn't line up. See the bolt head in this image:

It's holding OK but I've already sheared two bolts because it doesn't sit true. I don't know what I'm missing or what's not right though.

Thanks

Power steering bracket help

Which engine is this, h22a8? Any history as to how it came to be?

Pretty sure that small bracket isn't supposed to be bent, I seem to recall it should be a long bolt, and you use it to set the tension in the belt (the round nub the bolt goes into, the other side should be loose to facilitate the fit).

I'll take a picture of mine when I get back home but that won't be until this evening , someone might beat me to it!

Power steering bracket help

Thanks. It's sort of an A8 it's an A5/A8 hybrid, but the power steering pump and bracket are from the A8.
I had wondered if it was bent, but looking at it it doesn't look like it has bent even though it's curved. Would be good to know if it's meant to be straight.

You've got it in the right place but it's not sitting true.
The flat part of the bracket should be completely parallel with the groove where it sits, with about a 1mm gap.

Power steering bracket help

Thanks Mills.
It might be the angle of my photo that makes it look different but mine is lined up just like yours and yours looks to have a bend in it too.
I will compare mine to your photos though to see if that helps.
Thanks

Power steering bracket help

No worries bud

Maybe try completely loosing the other bolt so you've got play in the bracket, then get the 2nd bolt lined up properly, hand tight if you can. Then do them both up a few turns at a time :?:

Some pictures attached:

1) the bracket should be straight, take it off and bend/whack it back into shape
2) the lower bolt (the one that broke) is only to set/adjust the tension, it should only be turned when the other 2 bolts are loose (To allow the pump to pivot). I would recommend getting hold of another, as a traditional bolt maybe too short to safely set the tension or get enough grip on the threads without pulling them out.
3) the bolt should be quite long, about 2 inches total (with a domed end to aid locating)

these are from my h22a8 manual original.

hope that helps! If you've stripped the part that the troublesome bolts goes into, hot tip, loosen the big bolt (by the loom) and rotate it around 180 degrees. You'll catch the good threads first then the protruding bolt should clean up any damaged threads. Dont forget a little lubrication and be gentle!

I checked and i do not have a spare bolt - i sold the last PS pump complete... Can't remember to who, but someone should have one. If not lings parts might have one.

@aaronH was the user i sold the PS pump to, so there is a chance he still has the bracket/long adjusting bolt and large locating bolt with threaded bit kicking about, as i think he just wanted the pump but i sent it complete.
