Lude Generation

I bought the Irwin stubborn bolt remover for the lower caliper bolt and it worked a treat. When I got to the brake pads I found that the inner brake pad's wear indicator was at the bottom of the caliper and not the top as I was expecting and had to be prised out with a screw driver and hammer. When I looked at the pad it was worn on the inside and outside edges but not in the centre. Would the brake pad being incorrectly fitted (not by me) cause this? Or is it more likely that it was the very tight fit? New pads fitted but I would like to make sure it doesn't happen again........

You can see the uneven wear on the inner pads compared to one of the outer pads.

I'm no mechanic, but that surely could be caused by worn discs that need replacing?

My rears a couple of years ago that had a build up of corrosion after a sticky caliper caused uneven wear similar to this!!!

Disk look fine to me. I was wondering if it was because the inside pad was put in the wrong way with the wear indicator at the bottom and not at the top of the caliper?

Inside and outside pads could not be put in the wrong way, they simply would not go!

Wear indicators could not cause uneven wear like this. Not having wear indicators on mine I'm not sure what they're like but the ones I've seen in the past were just soft metal tabs to make contact with the disc to put the warning light on?
Your wear could only be caused by the discs themselves, with the pad being in direct contact with the disc at 0 degrees, therefore the uneven wear is directly influenced by the disc.

I'll look at the disk again but they looked straight to me and not warped in any way. The braking is fine and was fine before with no juddering etc. The inner and outer pads were in the correct place its just that the inner pad had the wear indicator at the bottom of the caliper when from the service manual it should be at the top.The pad on the far right of the picture is sitting the right way as the wear indicator is at the top. Picture the wear indicator at the bottom of the picture (rotated 180 degrees) and that is how both inner pads were sitting in their retainers. You can see the ears of the pads are straight so they can be place in the retainers the wrong way! Just hoping this was the reason they were wearing the wrong way!

this wear is caused by over heating of the pads, as heat dissipates near the edges (cools on outer edges first)
the reason why the pads are over heating because they were seized in the carrier which is why you had to hammer and chizzle them out. you need to coat the carrier/pad contact points with anti-seize copper grease to help with future prevention. i personally would replace the discs too as they will have a large ridge lip on the inside edges and the new pads will shape themselves to the lips.
