Steering rack boot HELP!!

Post by Bludge » Wed May 08, 2013 7:04 pm

Just took the car in for an mot and its failed on not having a switch for the rear fog light which is fine, but also on a split front steering rack gaiter/boot.

I have looked at some videos and tuts and im happy to change it myself, but the usual places i get parts from dont have a boot for the prelude.

Is it a specific size or are there universal ones i could use?

I have to take the car back tomorrow to get a free re-test, of i have to pay almost the full fee again, so want to get it sorted tomorrow if possible.

most auto factors do universal gaitors but they are not the same as oem ones ;)
had to do mine and the ones i got are more plastic and rigid than the rubber ones, they come too long and you have to cut the ends to the right size and really zip tie them well, or they like to pop off ;)

remember the fog light switch you fit has to have a light on it or next to it to tell you the fog light is on.

Thanks for the advice, just found these, guessing they will do the job to get it through the mot?

And didnt know about the fog light switch light, they didnt mention that when we spoke about it at the test center, but will get a switch with a light!
thanks!

They are out of stock, will have to phone around in the morning to find one. was tempted to try supergluing it together for the re-test! lol.

and yeah thats not good if i had gone to the trouble of putting in a switch only to find it was still a fail.

I once cleaned up a CV one with alcohol & bonded it using some very strong clear silicone sealant I got from a motor factors.

Much to my surprise, it held.

thanks vanzep, thats great. i need them for tomorrow really but might take you up on the oem one at a later date.

it seems to be leaking power steering fluid from the split too, how bad is that?

on the plus side, the rear fog was already wired in to the fogs switch on the dash, and it was just a bad connection near the actual lamp. happy days, one less headache for tomorrow!
