Rear break pads keep sticking

Post by Peachy » Thu Jun 27, 2013 3:39 pm

4th time now in 3 months-This is getting stupid.

Just driven back from the shops, and smoke coming off rear wheel drivers side. Had it sorted 3 times before by the garage, last time being only 6 weeks ago, setting me back £52. They said they cleaned them etc etc, well they must of done a bum droppings job. Apprantly the little molebump not on the break pad itself but on the metel part slips out of postion causing the pads to then stick. What can I do about this? Getting to the point now where I don't know where to go with the lude now. Help nedded please! Blooming hell its one thing after another with me and this lude.. :(

Do I need to buy the new bit of metel which the pads attach to?

:x :x :x :x

Prelude calipers need tlc once a year, maybe worth just replacing the whole caliper.

Brakes are one of the Preludes weak points, they need yearly maintenance or they will seize up. The more regularly they are maintained the easier it is to keep on top of them.

I dont understand this. Are you able to give a more accurate description?

IMO the 3 main resaons for sticking brakes are:

Sticking slider pins
Sticking piston
Pads have rusted into the carriers

It could be that all you need to do is get a slider refurb kit and some new pads, this is the cheaper option. Otherwise you may be looking at getting a whole new caliper, while "easier" it is more expensive, you'll also need new pads anyway. Really though it doesn't matter what you get if your garage is only doing a half assed job.

Rear Brake pads (2.0, 2.3 & 2.2 are the same) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-PRELUDE ... 35c143a60e

Slider pin refurb kit (you will need two, one for each side) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CIVIC-C ... 35c7c38708

Or

New brake calipers http://www.brakesint.co.uk/brake_hydraulics.html

If it were me I would replace the discs as well since they have a ton of heat put through them.

There is an epic brake overhaul writeup in the wiki if you fancy having a go you self http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/honda-p ... t2470.html Although if things are properly stuck it is a difficult job to do on a driveway.

Without knowing the exact reason for the sticking brakes it is hard to advise on the cheapest way forward with the least faffing around. Probably the new caliper route is the quickest and requires the least mucking around.

Check the 'breaking' threads mate, someone may sell you a pair of known good ones for less than you can buy one new one..
