Lude Generation

Evening guys.

I noticed this morning while taking my wheels off to do some welding that the driver's side handbrake is hardly pulling at all.
The mechanism is free and so is the cable.
Adjusting under the centre console makes no difference.
Winding back both pistons and pressing the brake pedal 20ish times to reset the auto adjuster makes no difference.

If I take the spring off and use a ratchet on the nut it locks up the wheel no problem.

It's gone dark now and MOT is in the morning!

Any ideas that I can try tomorrow at the butt crack of dawn would be much appreciated.

maybe the cable is overstretched

i would have thought you have not wound the pistons properly.

wind piston in, then turn it back a quarter of a turn, this then resets the handbrake cam in the caliper.

Mercutio. I've thought of that too. Just trying all my options because I'm not sure my heat shields will go back on once they're off! :/

i had to replace an overstretched handbrake cable on my 4th gen - lets hope it isnt that - i have heard that you can take the cable off and drip some oil down inside to free it up - if thats what the problem is. Hope you get it fixed.

I've solved it. I serviced the brakes last week and one of the slider pin boots was split causing uneven wear on the disc. When I've changed all the seals it's started to wear correctly but obviously there are high sections on the disc now so the handbrake was only grabbing at those sections. Left alone it will be fine in a week or two. But that leaves me stuck now. So I put the old disc and pads on for that side. I'll swap them back when I bolt my decat back in later.

Well it failed on being too loud and the handbrake.
I've had the caliper stopped again and it seems the ratchet for the handbrake is broken inside.

So yeah it seems anyone with an aftermarket exhaust is going to have issues come MOT time. As the wording of the fail is that it exceeds the sound level of the manufacturers standard. :/

Go to a different MOT tester. He failed it on his own prejudice. I think the official line for failing for being loud is one of it being noticeably louder. Find a deaf MOT tester

Luckily I have my original exhaust. So I don't have a problem there. But Trying to find a recon caliper today is turning out to be a nightmare! :/
