i took a couple of lessons once but never got the chance to finish it its not as easy as you think

Pilot himself said

"The accident was caused by a faulty flight control part known as a servo. This part controls the pitch mechanism of the rotor’s control which is why the helicopter made the turn it did."

So it got stuck or something putting him at that ridiculous angle with no way to recover?

yeah the rotors are effectivly steered by pivots on the cobras making them very manouverable
