Dodgy Car Tax Site ???

I've just done my car tax online, but before I went through the official .gov.uk site I stumped on this site...

http://taxdisc-direct.co.uk/

I went through the first stages of entering my reg and car manufacturer, found it odd on the next page where you get to choose 6 or 12 months but it doesn't tell you the amounts, but became highly suspicious on the next page where it asked for all my personal details! :?

I then went and found the official site...

https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPo ... =directgov

As you can see, they're very similar and I had simply thought that the official site had just been revamped.

Just thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention if they hadn't already seen it. It came up at the top of my Google search.

Sneaky bastards, although top right of the page:

And bottom of the page:
Our service is not connected to or affiliated with the GOV.UK or Driving Vehicle Licence Agency and acts as an agent processing the application. These services are available from other government sources without the additional service fee. The additional benefit of using this website include, instant email confirmation, 24/7 online support, application checked for errors & omissions, telephone application service and full compliance with data protection act.
And 'service charges' tab:
For each vehicle type, you can see the rates of vehicle tax for six months (where applicable) and twelve months by providing the vehicle registration number, make, model & engine size. If you fill this information on the form on the home page or apply for a tax disc link, it will return the amount payable for 06 months and 12 months (where applicable).

If you are paying online via credit or debit card, taxdisc-direct.co.uk will levy a service fee of £40. Please note that if you plan to cancel the application after it has been processed by taxdisc-direct.co.uk, only the service fee of £40 (less administration fee of £8) will be refunded.
So they do actually seem to be legit, just charging you for something you could actually do yourself.

Still don't know if I would trust them though.

Perfectly legal, they call themselves 'agents'..
For a 'nominal' £40.00 fee, they will pay your tax for you.
Bottom feeding, dog felching bastards - should be illegal - or at the very least, legal to set about them with a ball-peen hammer..
They're hoping people won't notice, then sting them £40.00 for the privilege of completing their own on-line form, before whoring out your details to cap it off.
@rob quilter right, always check for the .gov domain..

^^ I didn't see that a moment ago @Donald

Yeah there is sites doing the same with driving tests and others doing it with passports. My woman got stung with the driving teat site charge £20+ the actual coat of the test. They probably do send out the tax but with a surcharge on top. Sneaky buggers like cos I reckon they get a lot of people not clued up on computers and don't bother reading the small print.

This should really be reported to the Dvla as "passing off" and trying to trick people into paying admin fees. The style and layout of the webpage is very very similar to the Dvla.
