Shouldn't make any difference, but are you IE or firefox?

EDIT: did you also answer the security question, bottom left?

I can' register ether, click register in the pop out box and it just shows me a spinning sign

That was using the register near the login on the right not at the top

EDIT: Sorted, both links now resolve to the full registration page. (Kawa)

Managed to register using the top link, activated my account from the link in the email
logged in and now it's asking for an activation key?

I can't seem to recreate it. It was after activating my account and then logging in
