My 5th gen took a whack to the rear quarter at some point in its life, and one of the symptoms is that the block that holds the boot torsion bars in place has been ripped out and has damaged the metal, or the previous owner properly clattered the block somehow. IMO it looks like a very difficult thing to repair.
One way to get around this would be to install a pair of gas struts on the boot lid arms. Has anyone ever done this before? An added benefit from this is I can install as deep 6x9 speakers as I like
Should I buy an approximate sized generic gas strut and fabricate the rest?
Congratulations to vtecmec for winning May/June's Lude Of The Month, with his DIY Turbo BB1 build.

Gas Struts for Boot Lid?
that does look like a good solution
i bought some struts for ford focus and they were cheap off ebay
these fixings look good - should make the job easier. when you buy struts you can specify if you want eyelet or ball joint or cup

Gas Struts for Boot Lid?
My block came out a few years ago and i noticed the metal sheet that it sits in had broken. I could get everything back together but it would rip straight back out as soon as I moved the boot. I ended up twisting the block back into place. Then I used plenty of abro steel epoxy putty to smother it on top and around where it sits. After about a week I tried again, and its held for around 3 years now. Must admit though its not a nice job, bending those torsion bars back in place laid on my back, I was sure I was going to lose a finger or my nose end! Good luck if you try this way.
