Did you use primer and had the paint fully cured?

I used an acid etch primer and not wrinkle paint but 2 pack epoxy to do my cam cover only a week or so ago. I sanded the letters first and carefully dabbed on some grease over the writing and sprayed it in work, because that what I do, I am a sprayer.

I never tried the grease method before and it worked perfic, no risk of damage to the paint afterwards, no mess, better still no masking.

you still must be carful not to get the grease on parts you want to paint

which I did on my first attempt, taking some time with masking tape on the letters worked best for me
