How do you clean standard alloys without making them shiny?

As the title says, how do you keep the finish of the standard "dull" alloy wheels?

My alloys have recently took a battering from brake dust. I never previously had to do much more than scrub them with a brush. I think the garage must have cleaned my alloys with a scouring pad and removed the laquer

I used some Maguirs Hot Wheels to clean them, which seemed to do a relatively good job, but then I put some RimWax on it started to "polish-finish" them !

Long and short of it, is there a sealant you can use if the laquer's been removed?

That's what I was leaning towards, but, was trying not to have to remove the wheels each time for the lacquer
