without buggering up the paint and clear coat, its been on for a good few years.
any suggestions?

Heat it (hair dryer) pull it off, remove residue with sticky stuff remover, wd40 or whatever

Sticky stuff remover works a treat... And U can also use the bug/tar remover by autoglym .. Failing that take it to a decent Carwash theybtend to have a few options.

Hair dryer won't get hot enough. I use a heat gun and heat the area up gently. Then pull out off and heat the strip add you go along. A solvent degreaser will remove any residue.

Then machine polish out the rest and hope completely goes away.
