Talk to me about engine bay detailing

Post by nitin_s1 » Thu Jun 10, 2021 8:01 pm

Hey guys it's been a long time since I've posted or asked 'noob' questions so today is your lucky day.

Now the summer is coming back and the covid restrictions are easing a bit :?, the Prelude might be coming back to the road. (it's been off the road for a long time  )

I will need some body work looking in to but was thinking of getting my engine bay sorted. It's currently black, rocker cover is flaking, some bits rusty, overspray from the previous job and it generally needs a tidy up.

What will be the estimated costs for a semi wire tuck and full engine bay re-spraying to phoenix yellow? Do you guys have any recommendations of the garages that could do the work? Not looking to do this straight away but sometimes in the future.

I suspect no one will want to paint the bay unless you took the engine out. If you weren't planning that then the cost is already too much.

I doubt anyone would want to wire tuck it for you - its one of those things you probably have to do yourself.

I like the engine bay to be honest - not overly shiny on the black plastics or tarted up. When I painted my rocker cover i was more annoyed than before. 3 or 4 years later it now looks OK as it doesn't look so over the top.

Each to their own though - i cant help recommend anyone who would do either service I'm afraid.

Surely Mr Ratty is the man for valve covers, and re-spray?

Hond R for wire tucks etc.

All I did with mine is remove as much of the removable engine gubbins as possible such as battery, brackets, air intake, ground wires etc etc and move other stuff out of the way and secure so all paintwork is exposed.
Thoroughly degrease with Bilt Hamber Surfex HD, spend time cleaning everything.
I then did my thing and removed rust, sanded and painted.

Honestly though a dam good clean will be the best thing to do first.

When my engine was out at performance Autoworks I spent the day cleaning the engine bay whilst it w as s out, no respray, just a clean and polish. Works wonders.
