No he is not. not in every circumstance. all you need do is remove all frequencies that are stereo dependent so anything above about 130hz is discarded. That way you get the immersive feel of a surround bass field without the terrible artifacts associated with omni directional mid and top. Cars are basically small tin boxes and the distances associated with normal negative artifacts are not present.
Mave you never been to a gig where they use bass infill around the room?
Or delay stacks?
Believe me anything you could do inside a car with sound is like a childs toy compared to the kit i work with on a daily basis (as far as stereo artifacts, comb filtering, phase differentials etc go) and you can use bass in many ways that people are not conversant with to improve your sound.
I did this in my car to give me a much richer bass response yet still have a full boot. both rear shelf drivers are running mono off a mono JL audio bass amp and are crossed at 100hz. This basically gives a 12'' moving mass reproducing only bass frequencies just behind me. Um, isn't that a sub woofer ratty?
Yet still have a full boot space. Checkmate.

Like i said then only if they are bandpassed and attenuated.
The brain cant localize subfrequencies up to around 250-300hz so you can place it in the boot assuming you get the right group delay and stop any rattles and buzzes that you brain might localize.
Im more on about full rangle speakers in the back. They simple cannot work. Unless of course its in a logic 7 type system of dolby type surround.
Some guys even have had success using a 3 way front end and sub but putting the midbass speakers behind with the rigt time aligment but only playing up to 200hz since the brain cant hear direction at that frequency.
AT those frequency phase and stereo image is important so you would want the speakers are wide away as possible.
But you cant compare home pa to car audio. Car audio is full of nasties, windows, cabin gain, materials and reflections and smallness and seating position. I hate expensive car audio. Its my weak point.

Totally agree. You cant have tops coming from behind you.
Home audio is even more prissy than car audio imho. none of the kit allows for any real modulation of the sound unless you spend 15k and the cones are of such poor design quality most of the time you are lucky to get 60% of the asdvertised dynamic range.
you aint had jobby to deal with till you've had to level 25,000watts in an oblong room with partial suspended celing and concrete walls.
clap in one corner get an echo, clap in another and get dead space. not a good day in P.A.
I have a full digital xover running my home audio. 4 way stereo, double sub.
good job I have no neighbours..
