3rd gen (88-89 years)VSS (Vehicle Speed sensor) repair

Post by ElSquiddo » Sat Jul 25, 2015 11:18 pm

Hi all,
has anyone knoweldge of a sucessful repair of the 88-89 3rd gen prelude VSS?
Mine has gone, speedo dosent work but odometer does, and autobox flashes out S4 light when vehicle is in motion, which from what I've read on forums and in the troubleshooting section of the workshop manual indicative of a VSS failure.
Now from what i've read on the internet, it seems that sadly the 88-89 preludes have a odd VSS which is behind the dashboard cluster, not the usual under the bonnet one, which appears to be the case with mine, as under the bonnet the bit from the gearbox has the 2 vacuum hoses and a speedo cable coming out from it, no wires or such like,

I've taken the dash apart and located the VSS and a board which is listed as circuit signal amplifier, speaking with a work friend who knows about electronics he reckons its most likely the circuit signal amplifier has died, probably a duff cap or transistor, so were going to attempt to replace components on the board until it works again.
To save some trouble and potential headaches does anyone here know if this has been done before, and if so are we in the right ball park?

To make things a bit clearer, heres a picture

In the picture part 16 is the VSS sensor, part 20 is the amplification circuit.
the actual vss is a very simple light interruption with 2 caps, that's it, hence why we suspect its ok, the circuit amplifier board has a lot more on it, plus it really stinks as boards do tent do when there's an issue.
