yes. get a load of cheap silver/bitu matting and put it into the doors. cover the holes as much as you can so the doors are more sealed from the interior and put multiple layers closer to the speakers. also place it on the outside skin of the doors.
felt packing (or old pillows emptied and the padding used) is then used in any obvious, but dry, holes. like behind the rear side palstics on the lude. Im not sure about a golf but it will have cavities you can fill with wadding behind the interior panels. this will help stop bass from terminating in these holes as they will not be so big.
do this and ypu will have MUCH better sound.
look on youtube etc for research and guides of how to apply. I generally go for a heat gun and a glove. warm it gently then press it on the the gloved hand. cover as much as you can and seal the doors.

Sound deadening matting such as Dynamat (overpriced pap), and Silent Coat (the one to get) will stop panel resonance, vibrations and "some" pass though noise.
You need a sound blocker or absoler to reduce the airbourne noise. Something like Closed cell foam followed my Mass loaded vinyl is the proven best way but MLV weights 5 kg per 1msq sheet.
Iv gone for Acoustic thinsulate and will post my results soon. My car is very quiet but the Yoko AD08 are very loud. Also iv purposfully not deadened the firewall to allow engine and VTEC roar. Bwahhhhahahahahahahahahaha.
