H22 Distributor query. Today is the day..

Post by CrunchyAdams82 » Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:16 am

Hi guys,

Ok, this is my first post regarding some new developments.

Picking up a JDM 4th gen BB4 next weekend which has an issue with the ignition.

From what I gather, it just cuts out when warmed up. This would seem to me to be the distributor assy or crank sensor (which is incorporated in the dizzy assy I think??).

Hopefully that's all it is, cos I'm taking a punt here. :?

I have a UKDM dizzy at my disposal off a H22A2 BB4, and was just wondering if it will fit on a H22? Or will I need to procure a JDM one?

Just unsure about the internal/external coil thing. If somebody could explain, that would be ideal. ;)

And if you have any other ideas as to what the fault may be, please post up..

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Ta.

Ok, cheers mate. Problem is, I can't check the code on the suspected faulty one because it's a 2 1/2 hour drive away!

My plan is to get a lift up there, change the dizzy, and drive off.

I know it's a bit of a gamble, but hey...Honda Prelude! 8-)

TD60U is the JDM vtec disitributor and TD89 is the UK vtec one - I believe you can use either in any 4th gen vtec.

Cut out when warm could also be main relay ;)
can you restart it straight away once its cut out?

Recently I learnt a lesson that 4gen and 5gen dizzies are different

I don't know about that Nick, but he reckons he's checked the main relay.

What are you saying then? If you can start it straight away again, then it may be the main relay?

And if you have to wait for it to cool down a bit, then it's more likely to be the dizzy?

main relay cuts out when warm due to dry solder joints and you normally have to wait a while for it to cool down before it will restart - if thats whats happening then most likely main relay. If you can start it straight away then could be disti.

if youve got a spare vtec disit TD60 or TD89 then id try that first as its easy to swap them - just mark up where the disit is aligned at the moment and make sure you put the new disit on in exactly the same alignment. The main relay is under the steering column and is a bit fiddly to remove.

Hmm, ok. I shall ask the question. How easy/time consuming is it to change the main relay then hypothetically?

about 15 minutes - buts its fiddly as you have to lie on your back in the drivers footwell and reach up to undo the bolt that holds the relay and bracket in place.
