Surely it's not right that I can take the key out of the ignition when it's still on, ie, the first click?

No you shouldn't be able to do that. Sounds like either the key or ignition barrel is very worn

Wasn't there a recall on 5g ignitions, or have I just made that up?

yes there was a recall
if it hasnt been done before honda should do it, although some honda garages may fobb you off
when I went in I took a copy of the honda bulletin I printed off the net
or find one from a breaker
try another key first if you have a spare

check you paperwork first make sure
if its been done, they probably wont do it for free
wouldnt expect the ignition to be worn either if its been replaced
