Alternators...

Sooo... Has anyone tried converting a 5g OBD-II alternator to fit a 4g OBD-I ?
I ordered a Lucas alternator for £86.99, advertised to fit a '96 4g VTEC. It arrived today and it's got the square OBD-II connector not the round OBD-I
Everything else *appears* to be identical.
Now since I can't find the correct alternator for less than twice the price I paid I've gone and ordered this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLTAGE-ALTER ... 0300&rt=nc
The thought being I can swap the OBD-II regulator for this one and re-use the rear casing from the old alternator to make a complete new OBD-I alternator unit...
I can't think why this wouldn't work but has anyone tried it before? I'm just trying to save a few quid really

Have I missed something obvious? I haven't checked the pulley diameter but even if it's different I'll be able to swap them over... What else is there?!
