ABS code 4-4, 4WS code 3-6

Hi

My 4g 2.2 has an ABS error, which it has had since I bought it. I've taken the day off work to have a look at it and this is what I've discovered thus far.

1. From startup, there's no ABS or 4WS warning light. However, as soon as you drive away the ABS light will come on. Within a matter of seconds, 10-15, the 4WS light will also come on.
2. I fitted a toggle switch to the diagnostics jumper, I reset the 4ws fuse (10a clock/radio) and cleared all of the error codes.
3. I turn the ignition to position 1, I get 4 quick flashes and 4 quick flashes from the ABS light, I also get 3 slow and 6 quick flashes from the 4WS.
4. I can translate the 3 slow/6 quick from the 4WS as rear, right-hand side speed sensor.
5. I can translate the 4 quick/4 quick from the ABS as the rear, right-hand speed sensor.

Now, I'm going to go crazy and suggest that my Honda, in its wisdom, can tell me that the rear, right-hand sensor is causing both the ABS and 4WS errors. It's not going to be the ABS castellation ring too, I'm just thinking head if I'm going to have to strip down the rear assembly and therefore in a position to change the ring at the same time.

Regards

Rear sensor seems likely indeed! I have a feeling the ring on the rear is part of the hub/bearing assembly - not sure it can be swapped separately.

If it's the reluctor ring, they can be swapped over between hub's fairly easily.

This is a completely normal failure mode - cause of both system faults can (and commonly are) the same issue, because the 4WS system takes it's speed signal from the rear speed sensors on the car, via the ABS system.

It's almost certainly the sensor (they're not uncommon to fail) but could be the reluctor ring being either dirty or corroded/damaged/missing.
Bell out the sensor with a multi meter (there's an orange plug for each sensor on the rear subframe that you can disconnect). If it's o/c then it's knackered. If it has between 1kOhm and 1.6kOhm (rear sensors) then it's ok, but make sure you gently wiggle both flexi bits of the cable while you hold the meter on the pins, to see if it drops out.

What you're suggesting is, pass current up one side of the sensor, read the resistance coming back; 1k-1.6k ohm, it's fine, if there's a break, it's cream-crackered? It has also been suggested to blow out the rotation sensor too, as that can become clogged with road grime/muck, but I suspect it's wallet-opening time......... again! :D

Yes, exactly that. But like I say, if you get a good reading, remember to give both flexi ends of the cable a gentle wiggle too, to see if it drops out.

you should be able to find a good 2nd hand sensor if needed - i had a spare set but sold them to someone on the forum - the going rate for this part is about £20-£30 each.

I've tried, no luck whatsoever....... if you can point in the direction of one, it'd be much appreciated! :D
