The stereo in my 5th gen is well past its sell by date, it came with a crappy, appalingly fitted sony headunit, possibly from 1998 paired with some equally dire and badly fitted Alpine 6x9s that the bootlid torsion beam thing strikes every time I shut the boot. The only positive is that the standard door speakers avoided the amateur touch.
I want to go with a component set up. I've heard that the fronts are 6" jobs so will need to use an adaptor plate to run my preferred 6.5" components (excursion). But what are my options for the back speakers besides using a 6x9" to 6.5" adaptor?
Also any recommendations for a headunit?

I got a pioneer head unit really good up to you if you want touch screen or just standard cd unit though most have Bluetooth USB ports nowadays

Depends what you want the headunit to do. Because mine is not a daily I was not bothered by dab, but I wanted to be able to stream from my spotify and wanted double din as just think they look better. I have always liked the sound output from Alpines so went for this

My vote would go to the Sony XAV-AX100 or other members of that Sony series. They are well priced, and integrate well with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Having Google or Waze maps, Spotify and Whatsapp messaging with voice control really works well. You can even combine with reversing camera too.

My main requirements for a headunit are basically that it should still be able to play CDs, and have android connectivity. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I've always used Pioneer before mainly because thats what i'm used to but i'm not blindly loyal to pioneer.

I can't comment on headunit. It's been years since I used them. I now just use tablet in the prelude over bluetooth to a processor, bluetooth to OEM unit on the s660 and CD less alpine headunit in my van but iPod and radio.
As for speakers. 6.5" for the fronts fine with Meg rings. 6x9 are fine for their rear but they need to be band limited to lower mid-range or midbass. Any high frequencys from the rear ruin sound stage.
I used to use Genesis p69 6x9 subwoofers playing midbass/sub frequencys from my processor and sounded great and saved space.
Front speakers depends on your budget. Im a huge Hybrid audio fanboy and I have used their Imagine line or try their cheaper mirus line of speakers.

The tablet is a custom install on the centre console.
The processor/amp is a Helix PSIX DSP in the boot and it uses AptX bluetooth. All music on the tablet is listless and I honestly cannot hear any difference against a CD.

Is that an abbreviation? I ended up with some excursion SHX6C components in 6.5" form but im struggling to find adaptor rings, i'm guessing thats what meg rings are. Oddly enough my BMW got smacked up the backside on the motorway just days after posting this topic so the Prelude inherited a pioneer headunit, bassface amp and cheeky little 10" sub.
