A lot of people will tell you to get a Cat1 fitted. But in reality they offer no real insurance discount any more unless your car is worth a lot of money, which ours aren't :(

TBH what I would do is get a basic alarm/immobiliser, but have the siren fitted inside the cabin, somewhere above the drivers footwell/pedals. The fact is no one takes notice of alarms these days, so doesn't offer much deterant to thieves. Putting the siren inside the car will make it unbearable for them to be in there for any length of time, so they won't be able to take out your stereo or try and hotwire the car, not with 120dB blasting a foot from their ears!

Just remember, an alarm is unlikey to stop them trying, so may still smash the window, but you are more likely to retain your property.

You can get alarms that go off when someone gets close to the car. Gives a few warning peeps and then goes for it if they don't move. Whihc will draw more attention before they can even get in and might act as more of a deterrant

I find the proximity sensors are a waste of time, they don't do anything a window sticker and flashing LED doesn't already do!!

Fair enough. I'm thinking the car is already making the F off noises before they touch it. Depends on the theif & area I guess.

True...our cars are old now so not so much the cost of alarm as the quality of installation.

Personally I have the stock immobiliser but fitter a carvox pager alarm. Works very well for me. I installed it myself.

Also I agree with the siren. I will relocate mine to the inside.

Hope this helps.

I'm nowhere near Stafford haha! But I was already thinking of a toad alarm. I know it might not stop people breaking into my car, but like you said, it might help protect my belongings inside.

neither am I tash, neither am I. That was as an example of expected cost from a fitting company inclusive ;) .

toad do til sensors and pager tags as well. the fob does everything and you dont have to fiddle about with little poxy keyring doofers touched to the dash sensor etc...

whatever you get, make sure it's got a clearly visible flashing light. the main value to me of an alarm system is a deterrent. if they smash a window to then find out you've got an alarm, you've still got a smashed window.

fwiw i've got the toad ai606 and can confirm it works (opened my boot in tesco's without disarming the alarm. twice! :? )
