5g key cutting & programming

Post by Drax » Mon Jun 07, 2021 4:46 pm

I have 1x black key for my 5g, and nothing else. i know you can get another programmed using a red key but that isnt an option here.

do i have to go to honda only and get another one done from my black key? or can other people that cut keys for cars have the new key programmed?

i found this info;

but im still unsure.

I made myself some spares from a black key.

Went on ebay and bought a few " T5 " honda blanks, had them cut and programmed (copied) at a local keysmith place, nothing fancy.
It was basically a small stand in a shopping centre, and while the guy said he doesn't specialize in car key programming and couldnt guarantee anything, it went thru just fine.

All in all about a 30 euros expense haha :angel: :clap:

I also only have 1 key and could do with a spare, what happens if you lose the fob is that only for the central locking?

key/transponder is for the engine immobiliser only.

fobs are only for central locking (and the central locking is normally used for arming/disarming a honda added alarm (added after manufacture)).

Keys are so old now, most key cutting places have the equipment to copy to transponder code as its very simple. I expect in the UK even timpsons would be able to do it.

You can add new fobs to the system without the red key, but prelude fobs are hard to find on ebay. They are different to the civic ones of the same era even though they look the same. The process is easy to follow (some combination of key on / key off / door open / learn them in one at a time).

BTW, this is how my keys look like. I bought them ages ago, so there's no way to find the exact same advert/seller, but chances are there's one factory in china spewing all of them out and they're the same.
