noisey aircon

I have noticed that the aircon in my 4th seems to be making a whirring noise when it is running. I am sure it was a lot quieter before, it is now as loud as the rad fans. I have also noticed a lot of gurgling from behind the passenger dash when I switch off.

I am thinking it might just need regassing but could it be something more sinister? It does seem to pushing some cold air still. I have to get this fixed cuz I am driving her to Barcelona next month!

Of course I could be losing it and all aircons are this loud, I just haven't noticed before...

Any ideas?

happened to mine, I removed the whole system

think you need a new condenser, its the bearings in there

Ahh, great, i'm thinking Lude-dude suggestion of the condenser makes sence.. ill check the manual tonight when I get home, its definately a moving part bearingy type of noise... I'd appreciate dibs on yours so I can get it fixed quick...

If it's under the bonnet it's the compressor, which is driven from the aux belt. The condenser lives in with the heater stuff above the passengers feet.

It could be that there isnt enough fluid/gas in the system, hence the gurgling sound and whiring from then pump?

Don't Halfords do regassing?

They do, but i would go to a specialist.
In fact, here's my thread if its of help, the last posts explain why I didn't go to any of the high street types.

Thought I would update this....

I have discovered that my coolant is 134a so I dont have to worry about converting or using special gas. I opted for the Halfords options because the only garage in the area that said they could do it was one I don't trust, and have had bad exp before.

So I got my gas, valve and some funky free cleaner and followed the useful youtube... Job done..

But what I have discovered is that both the Rad fans are on when I turn the aircon on which was making the noise. this might indicate a faulty coolant temp switch, I need to check that out tomorrow.... or it might be supposed to do that... Can someone just let me know if when idling both fans come on when they turn on the Aircon... if they do it means I am imagining the whole problem...

On the up side the Aircon is working and is cold as with the regas and when I get my tenner back on the bottle the whole thing would have been less than £45 and I reckon I have enough Gas left to top up my other 2 cars as well..

think its problem solved then bud, like you said when the aircon is turned on both fans will fire up and continue running until its turned off.
