4th Gen - Horn Not Working

Hi Guys,

I hope you're all well.

My 4th Gen's horn has stopped working. The MOT is due next week and I urgently need to fix it. I've tried the following things:

- Replace horn relay
- Replaced both horns
- Checked engine fuse box (STOP/HORN) all OK.

When I press the horn buttons. I can hear the relay clicking but no sound from the actual horn. The cruise control works fine.

Anyone had any similar issues or know a fix?

Cheers

Have you tried running a 12v fly wire to the horn to check the horn sounder physically sounds? They earth to the slam panel on the 5th gen so probably the same for the 4th gen too (the multiplug is the 12v feed). That would help you work out if it's the sounder or the related feed.

They can seize up if they don't get used much as they are mechanical. Like a starter, have someone give it a tap with a hammer whilst you press the horn button - it may spring into life.

@Scott560 i checked to see if there is any voltage coming through either of the horn plugs but nothing. Following the loom, it goes into the engine fuse box then into the car, behind the fuse box.

I can’t figure out where this is earthed on the 4th Gens?

normally, the horn relay control earths through the steering column itself on the older cars, as the steering column is bolted to the chassis somewhere. The horn itself will earth to the slam panel (the multiplugs only have 1 wire in them)

if you can hear relay clicking, then the control/relay side is probably fine. On the 5th gen, the horn relays are the small half width black ones at the top of the footwell fusebox (right at the back lol). There are multiples of these relays in that area, so you could swap them to rule out the relay output contacts being burnt out.

If it still doesn't work after swapping the relay (and you still hear the clicking) then its most likely a fuse for which ever circuit feeds the horns.

@Scott560 Today I've been through every fuse and relay in car and engine bay. I ended replacing both fuse boxes and still the same issue. I think tomorrow I'll replace the airbag steering squib to see if that changes anything. It's really confusing!

Hi Guys,

I feel defeated on trying to fix this.

I have replaced;

- Steering airbag squib
- Steering Wheel
- Relay
- Interior and Engine fuse
- Replace both horns (tested both)

I am just not getting voltage to the horn plug. I've followed the diagram from the Prelude Manual but I'm even more confused. This Prelude has a Blue/Red / Black wire to the horn plugs. On the manual it shows it having a White/Yellow / Blue Red wire. My other 4th Gen Prelude (5 of them both UK/Imports) has it the way the manual shows. All the wiring is stock, nothings been replaced or damaged as it looks like all OEM wiring - I've gone far as checking the loom that goes behind the wing into the car. But very odd that this is the only Prelude that has a different colour wiring to the plug.

Any help or pointers would be great! I've spent days on this without being close to resolving it :(

There is a whole section on this in the manual page 23-290 to 23-297. Grounds are G-401, G-402 & G-404
Is this the 4th gen that has been converted from H23A?
The only other thing i can say is that there might be an issue within the connector at the horns - Ive had similar issue with connector at front headlights.
Hopes this helps :)

ive had issues with the horn in my 4g several times but its on an aftermarket steering wheel, and both times im pretty sure it has been the contacts on the horn button itself. if i disconnect the two horn wires and short them, the horn will beep. if not, its something further back in the wiring

Hi @vanzep,

Yes, it was converted from a H23A to H22A (inc engine and internal loom replaced). I didn't replace the loom from the horn plugs to the engine fuse box and behind the internal fuse box.

My other H23A has a White/Yellow / Blue Red plug to the horn so I'm confused why this lude doesn't have the same. They are both 95/96 UKDM H23A original models. Yet this one has a Blue/Red / Black wire plug. I've tested both horns with direct power to them and have deafened me.

Yes, mine is all original inc steering wheel and airbag. Checked the contacts on the horn and seem fine. No power at the plugs.

I'd live to know anyone who has a UKDM H22A and H23A what colour the wire plugs are on there's?

have you tried this first suggest of scotts? i would do this then work backwards - the replacements you've used may be faulty
