single DIN stereo fitting

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm a newbie!

I want to replace the stock radio/cassette on my '96 Prelude 4G with a standard single DIN CD/radio.

Is there any special procedure needed to remove the stock unit, or do I have to remove the whole double DIN stereo/tray affair?

cheers,

David

Sure, I thought I would. But my question is - do I have to take the whole double DIN assembly out, or can I just pull the single DIN radio/cassette out of the double DIN assembly (with the release keys, of course)?

The owners manual tells you to remove the outer surround (the part covering the gearshift and sides of the centre console) and then removing the radio with the double DIN tray.

Without seeing the stereo itself though, I can't quite understand why that would be necessary. My lude's got an aftermarket Alpine installed in the standard tray (i.e. with the original cubby slot underneath) and sitting comfortably inside the original outer surround.

Mines just held in by the cage bud. Its slotted in (nice tight fit) then I've pushed those metal tabs on the cage out to prevent it from coming back out.
Then I'm using something like this to fill the gap:

Although, this looks like a better solution:
