Genuine Honda Oils - HFS 5W40

The Honda recommended Castrol oil for the S2000 and NSX seems to be specific to the HFS 5W40 whereas all other Honda's get recommended the Castrol Edge stuff. Indeed, most people shove the Castrol Edge FST 5W40 in the S2000's (because its the best), but I did a bit of digging. Why is the S2000 and NSX oil specific?

So I've bought 6ltrs of the Honda HFS 5W40 from Hendy Shop as it was reasonably priced, and I'm going to use it on the next oil change and top ups. It is labelled only as "Synthetic Technology" (a bit unusual) and API SL/CF (ok but nothing special).

I then discovered a Honda Genuine Oils brochure about the HFS 5W40 oil and at the bottom of the page it has TOTAL.be as the source. A quick check on the Fully Synth oils they do in 5W40 narrows it to just one, Total Classic 5W40. This is indeed an API SL/CF oil and is labelled "Synthetic Technology". Coincidence?

Some more digging in the TOTAL oil range and brochures mentions that this oil is specifically good for "vigorous" driving, and engines FITTED WITH TIMING CHAINS (e.g. Nissan/Infiniti vehicles with timing chains)
• Honda/Acura • Toyota/Lexus • Mazda • Subaru
• For extended drain intervals • Optimum engine performance
• Exceptional protection of engine parts

So I suspect the HFS 5W40 oil is actually TOTAL CLASSIC 5W40. There is no other 5w40 API SL oil in their range.

There is one superior TOTAL oil which they do in 5W40 and its TOTAL QUARTZ ENERGY 9000. This is also recommended for timing chains and exceptional protection of engine parts.

I suspect that Honda knew that the oil needed a very specific oil package to best protect the high revving, timing chain equipped F20C.

I think based on the price of TOTAL QUARTZ ENERGY 9000 - I will be using this oil in the future.
It's marginally cheaper than the MOTUL X-CLEAN 5W40 I usually use.

Hope you find this "interesting".
