STEERING PROBLEM.

Post by gup160 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:13 pm

hi does any one no what is going on with my car, as im driving it the steering seems to be fine and all of a suden the steering tryes to go left and if i let go of the steering wheel it will go left and it does the same but to the right side aswell, its like i have to fight with the steering to keep it straight, and some days its fine for about 10min then the same s.h.i.t! i dont feel safe going 0ver 60mph, cause the car drifts, sways, over the road its quite scary tbh. theres no lights on the dash either. to add, its loverd about 35mm, its a 2.2 vti with 4ws, is it possible that the 4ws is causing this? any suggetions wud be great. regards ryan,

Does it only happen over a certain speed?

if im in the low revs about 10-30mph its ok, but if i bore it in any gear it pulls me really tight to the right, an sometimes sways the other way. also wen i go above 50mph driving round corners it drifts me left right, feels like the back end is going.

When you turn the ignition on, you should see an orange light on the dash saying 4WS. When you start the engine this should then go out.

If you don't see it at all, then someone has removed the bulb in the dash to hide a fault.

When the 4WS is inoperable, the rear wheels are held in the straight ahead position by a big spring and nothing more, meaning the rear wheels can steer either way without notice.

Well if it feels like the back end is going then it could definitely be the 4WS at fault. I've never dabbled with 4WS (Never had it) but over a certain speed the steering changes from turning in opposite directions (to allow you to turn tighter) to turning in the same direction (parallel, so you essentially drift sideways). I'm not sure, so hopefully one of the 4WS experienced members will say, but maybe it's possible for it to loose control if faulty and allow the rear wheels to run free :?:

Alternatively, tomorrow when it's light, get down under your car and check all the suspension arms... Make sure they're all in good order. Give everything a god wobble.

A god wobble

If the 4WS is working the car should feel solid on the road, never had it twitch on me - even when hooning it. Think Gayno has likely hit the nail on the head.
