Anyone else think they might be a little alcohol dependent?

Banter goes here, and doesn't have to be Lude related

your nothing compared to some of my friends, one drinks cider and black constantly that cannot be good for you

if it wasn't beer it would be something else, everyone has there chosen poison

personally I have to have a "smoke" after work, don't hardly drink unless I go out and don't smoke at work

When life gets a bit jobby I find myself drinking a couple of something or other every night. But soon enough one night I'll think I won't have one just to prove it to myself that I don't have to, and the feeling of REALLY wanting something to drink kicks in. To me that feels like addiction. I kicked smoking, weed, and some other drugs when I was younger (went down the wrong road etc.) There's no way I'm getting addicted to anything bad for my health ever again. It just takes far too long and far too much effort to recover fully. Life's for living.

Not to sound like an old fart that trying to body lemonade on your fireworks, but I agree with Pushki and Rob.
My Granddad actually died an alcoholic, and a total shadow of his former self, so unfortunately I feel like I can comment :(

I know we all got smashed as youngsters and occasionally still do! but I think some may be confusing being an alcoholic with alcohol dependency.

A few cans a night doesn't sound a lot, but if you NEED it, if you go to it as a force of habit, and can't sit there WITHOUT it, that's your worry. Ironically enough my Granddad ran a pub for 20 years and was teetotal for that time, but when he left, he started drinking, and it got more and more and so on, until he just wasn't the same person at all :(

LLL I'm not trying to scare you, just as concern for you're well-being - I would try Pushki's suggestion and go without it for a week or two. If you find that really difficult, then yes, maybe it's worth looking into.
I think the very fact you started this thread and asked the question tells of your own concerns anyway. Hope you take all this the right way! :)

The effects of alcohol actually go further than most relise it decreases your spinal fluid like ecstasy but not as badly but if drunk every night your spinal fluid doesn't get a chance to regenerate and can lead to serious back problems
I hit the limiter in my h23 vtec still didn't kick in

I also have to echo what Ben said, I lost my auntie to drink. She had a few drinks a week, that soon turned into every night, then starting at lunchtime.....til eventually she started drinking in the morning.

She used to be one of the nicest people you'd ever meet before the drink, she got to a point where she wouldn't have a shower for 3 weeks, soil herself and not change her clothes. She honestly looked homeless, even tho she lived in a massive house. She was having fits, became violent towards everyone, throwing plates and pans at us all when we went round.

The hardest thing was when we called out ambulances, she would refuse to go to the hospital. She refused to go to the doctors or anywhere, where she could get help....because she was in denial. She didn't think she had a problem and we couldn't force her to get the help she needed.

eh, its all on a downward slop. I think like most you get wrecked as a youngster and tail it off as you get on in life (well most people do). I have been considering my intake over say the last 20 years and find I have quite drasticly dropped my intake in the last 5. I think when I should have been worried I couldn't have given a toss and now I'm about 'average' I am considering thinking on it more.

I do need to make it clear though :) , I'm not worried for myself particularly. I started the thread as I had just cracked the first beer of the evening and got that gentle rush of pleasure and wondered if i was alone in this evening ritual. If I am doing something alternative or non beer related I dont feel the need or anything and I never drink in the day, even at weekends really, as it makes me crash. It seems there a are quite a number of us who to a lesser or greater degree drink to or just over the Gov recommended weekly amount and for the same reasons it seems.

Cant stand being drunk though  and hangovers are the work of the devil.

@rob and ben: wow, alcoholics have it rough. Sorry for your losses guys.

Drinking nearly every day cause you like it is 1/2 way to drinking every day cause you have to. Sorry :(
Talk to any alcoholic and they will tell you the reason(s) they started drinking and the long slow spiral to where they are now. I've known/know a few and well there stories are varied but they all say the same, it took years for them to realise their problem and it will take the rest of their life to deal with it. :(

Don't go there it's a world of pain adn heartache for you and your family.

Being able to stop, and actually stopping for a few days is the difference between it being OK and not. Anyone can say they're able to stop, but actually doing it, just to prove it to themselves is the difference between being addicted or not.

Interesting to hear how many we've lost to drink. I said goodbye to my Mum in November after 20 odd years of heavy drinking.
