The only times Ive ever had anything like this happen in all the years of ownership, it was the main relay issue (doesn't sound like yours as thats usually when you turn off, and try to restart, but could be worth a check anyway) and the ignitor, in the dizzy cap.
Silly q, you havent flooded it have you by pumping the accel?

If you take the dizzy cap off, you can also check the cap points and rotor arm while you're there.

A breaker yard has a dizzy for £80 that sounds quite expensive as I've seen 2nd hand ones on eBay miles away for £35

OK, well rule number one, leave the pedal alone.
Leave it for a bit then give it a go again, and don't touch the pedal, it should fire up without needing any help.
Shame I'm working or I'd offer to spin over mate. Sorry.

£70 is not tragic IMO, hopefully it's got the dizzy cap, rotor and coil and igniter too. I would try swapping the last two over before you get into changing the whole dizzy TBH.
Hang on, didn't you have issues with belts and stuff this week? Have you tightened any earth connections etc up properly? like on the alt, battery etc?

It could be the ignitor or coil, both of which are inside the dizzy cap and easy to replace.

Dizzy going is usually preceded by a 'death screech'!
what is this death screech thing ur on about?

Yeah just changed the belts mate. And didnt touch the alternator at all just loosened it to put the belts on.
