I'd love to go self employed, but have no idea where to start or what to do!!

It's easy :) I think I just phoned them with my NI number and confirmed a few things and then you wait for a tax code number or something to come in the post. I work in the construction industry (when I do go to work) and the company automatically deducts my tax and send the payment to HMRC for me. I'm sure it's similar in other sectors as well. I pay £2.40 a week in NI as well, compared to around £50-60 when I was employed.

Last April was my first tax return thingy... ended up getting a rebate of 1100 quid which paid for my lude. Happy days! I think I'm due to get about 6-700 quid again this year.

Yeah this!! I love anything to do with cars, and sometimes wish I'd gone into mechanics from day one, but I chose boring IT instead!!

Make the most of the opportunity for change!

Bit of a story here:

I finished high school, went to college, did my A-levels with the idea that I wanted to be an architect. The end of A-levels came and I hadn't applied to any universities, no longer knew what I wanted to do, and ended up stuck in a bit of a dead end in scaffolding for some years. About 2 years ago work started to dry up, I had no idea what I wanted to do still, so I took the chance to go abroad for a few months. I came back, still no regular work, did bits and bobs here and there, and now I'm back in college retraining in the animal field.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'd always like animals but thought I'd be better to suited to a different career. Now look where I am  doing what I probably subconsciously always wanted to do.

I would totally do something like that. The problem being I'm at the age where my girlfriend and I are saving to buy a house, and I really can't afford to go back to minimum wage for a long time, although minimum wage is better than no wage I suppose!!

Really sorry to hear this mate, I had a similar experience back when I was 18, I was working at Woolies when they were liquidated :( I'd been kicking about in that job for like 3 years, and tbh although it sucked at the time as I was inexperienced and nobody wanted to hire me, it made me get my arse into gear and find a better job. I went to work for the NHS as a finance clerk, now I'm coming up to 22 and I'm due to start a new job as a finance manager :? never would have made the effort if I hadnt lost my job in the first place.

Sounds like you've got some good experience already though working in IT, so hopefully you should be in a better position than I was!! Just keep your head up and things will work out buddy :) Always onwards and upwards :)
