VTEC not working

Post by Kawa » Wed Feb 19, 2014 9:58 pm

I couldn't find a "VTEC not working" thread

Mine hasn't been working for a few months since I first fixed my ignition switch problem. Typical, fix one thing, another one breaks.

Now the weather is kinda picking up, I want VTEC back!! :vtec:

Symptoms
No VTEC
Tops out at 6.5k

What sequence should I check things out as I CBA to spend too much time on it
1) Clean VTEC solenoid?
2) Manually engage vtec solenoid with some dodgy wiring bypass?
3) Check output from ECU, how?
4) What sensors could deter the ECU from sending the signal?

And the answers to ur questions is all of them . You can just take the solenoid off and activate it with a 12v feed. Give it a clean whilst ur there. You would have to get the wiring diagram and find the ecu's 12v output pin out. Then test it with a multimeter. (Had to do this to find the vtec wire for a vtec light in my civic ) you need a few things for vtec to work, oil pressure, engine warm, load/rpm's, throttle position.

Run a temporary wire from the vtec solenoid feed to a bulb in the cabin, it'll take you a few minutes, then take it for a spin and see if the solenoid is getting a live or not, if it is then your problem is mechanical (oil pressure or blockage) if not its probably electrical.

I hate to say it to you Terry, but have you checked your oil level isn't low first?
