Totally agree, that is bad!could be original alright at that shade, can only imagine the stinkMerlin wrote:Gearbox fluid is one of the most overlooked fluids in a car. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was the original fluid.

Dropped my bb2's last week and it was like new which was good to see.
When i changed my tranny oil in the Bb4 it was close to 2 months before the crunch left in 5th,the 3rd gear crunch went within days and i'm happy to say still crunch free

Re: BB1 MTF and Super Crack
yep totally possible that that is the original fluid - bolts were tight like they had never been removed before and ive removed quite a few previously. fluid was quite thin but i could feel some sludge in the box when i stuck my finger into the fill up hole
now all gears feel a bit smoother and less drag from the box but first gear is still a little bit notchy - will give it another week or two and see if it improves.
also should note i changed the vtec solenoid and gasket as the old ones was starting to leak

what does really stink is the old green coolant - very very strong smell of cat body lemonade and some sludge so need to get that flushed asapGreg-SiR wrote:Totally agree, that is bad!could be original alright at that shade, can only imagine the stinkMerlin wrote:Gearbox fluid is one of the most overlooked fluids in a car. BB1 new coolant -old green to new super red
just a note for my own info:
old cloudy green coolant drained and flushed and replaced with super red
couple of missing nuts and bolts from sump replaced and tightened up - so dont need a new sump gasket
thanks to @3rd gen steve for helping get this job done with minimum hassle
just need to change the power steering fluid as its a bit murky but not causing any issue at the moment

Re: BB1 Driveshafts
Had a good look at the passenger side driveshaft and intermediate shaft when carrying out the coolant change and they both definitely need replaced as there is a huge amount of play in them and they tend to buck when pulling away and chatter when turning in.
So got these used parts up to spec ready to go on
Im hoping that i can do this without having to drain and refill the gearbox oil as i just changed that last week
Might need a hand to get the hub nut off.....

The hub nut on both my cars came off rather easy which was surprising, not too easy as in loose but i had the spit on the hands and grip was on and they nearly went first go,shame as the work from then on in was a PITA
.
Great work so far, love these little jobs like fluid changes it just helps you know the car better and the bits you find on the way doing them!

Re: BB1 Driveshafts
cheers Greg - i dont have a socket big enough for the hub nut or a big breaker bar
but once i get past that i have everything else to do the job. Merlin has a quick and easy technique where you dont need to drain the fluid and can do the swap working off a jack stand. Not a lot has been replaced or changed on this lude and i think the driveshafts will be the original ones it left the factory with so theyve done well to hold together for 145,000miles+ Changing to the new ones should sharpen it up a bit. Its all the little jobs that add up to a big difference (eventually
)

Re: BB1 Ball Joints & Bearings
Sunday wasnt good
we couldnt get the driveshafts to seperate from the hubs even when using a 10 Ton press
so we stripped the hubs off and the lude has been sat on axle stands for nearly a fortnight
Steve is going to find a way of seperating the driveshafts from the hubs and order up some new bearings as they will most likely be knackered.
I have bought some replacement upper ball joints and they will be getting replaced.

I bought them here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250914809488? ... EBIDX%3AIT
Plan is to do this work on Monday and fit the new driveshafts.
Ive also upgraded/replaced the rad cap with new Billion 1.3bar rad cap - old rad cap seal had perished
Also the oil has been changed to Shell Helix Ultra Pro with the idea i will run both ludes on the same fluids so easier/cheaper to maintain.
