Service Questions

Post by ATR84 » Wed Feb 27, 2019 9:00 am

Hi All,

I want to start accumulating some service parts for next time I visit TGM, so they can fit them.

1. I want to service the whole ignition system, partly because there is no history of it being done and also because there are some nasty red leads on there at the moment and they have seen better days. What parts do I need? Cap, Rotor Arm, Coil, Leads and Plugs? Should I replace the whole dizzy while mucking about in that area? I would prefer to get OEM Honda parts, where is best to go? Lings Honda? Also, being a Type S, is everything the same as on normal UK ludes?

2. How much oil does the lude take and which oil filter is best? Also what grade of oil should I use? Looks like Torque GT put 5w 30 Fully synthetic in.

Regarding oil the 2.2 Prelude takes 4.8-.9L of oil while carrying out the oil change including filter. Honda specifies different oil weights for different ambient temperatures, I believe for the UK your best bet would be 5w30 / 10w40. I running 5w40 synthetic.
For choice of oil filter I have always believed that its more important to change your oil and filter often, than choose one brand filter over another.

If its never been done - id replace all ignition components. I wouldn't replace the dizzy itself, that's asking for trouble (disturbing oil seals, unsetting the base ignition timing etc). All of the replaceable parts can be done without disturbing it.

The dizzy itself is not mechanical like years of old, it just houses some reluctor rings and sensor, and then a typical ignition system bolted onto the end of that.

Coil is about 20 quid off ebay - i wouldnt see the need to pay honda price for one.
Cap and Arm is probably 50quid the pair - again, ebay items are completely acceptable and fitted fine.
Leads are your choice - either get some uprated ones or honda ones, i suspect cheap ones are a little nasty (not on the lude, but had a few the wrong size / bad fit / bit tight reach / wire pulled out etc in the past)
Plugs your choice - anything from 15quid NGK upto 50quid platinum jobbies, i've tried both and never seen the difference. Think i splashed out on some Denso super duper ones last time.

I always use the blue hamp filters, tenner on ebay. oil is currently 5-40 (widest temperature range stability).

Replacing all of those items is very easy (just don't lose the tiny spring on the coil!)

You can order from Lings, but also just from your local Honda dealer. Doesn't matter that it's a Type-S, they will be able to locate the right parts from the VIN.

The correct grade of oil for south UK climate is 10W-40.

For ignition parts, you can also get them from https://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/
I would trust their stuff more than something unbranded from ebay personally (I have been to their warehouse and they genuinely do have test equipment for test/repair/overhaul in house, so they do know what's what on ignition parts).

There are DEFINITELY differences in the quality of oil filters, depending on brand. There's lots of videos out there where people have cut some open, but here's one for an example

I always use genuine Honda branded ones on my Preludes, getting them from H-Tune (they're not expensive). FWIW I also always use Purflux on my Citroens (PSA OEM).

@wurlycorner so do you use 10w 40 oil in your ludes?

Everyone else seems to recommend 5w 40 or even 5w 30. A little confused, how much does it actually matter?

I'm using 10w40 as well, motul to be specific.
But weird indeed, recommendations are from 5w30 up to 20W-50 :D - designed for passenger cars equipped with gasoline engines.

I would suggest to use good quality 10w40 because of climate, you don't have too hot and too cold days so the viscosity should be ok
If everything else fails, read the manual!

Thanks, it's hard to know what to go for.

Also, can anyone confirm if these are the right ignition leads for the H22? I can't seem to find anything online.... https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/magneco ... -mnc45165/

Yes, I use 10W-40, only.

The correct oil grade to use in engines varies according to climate (temperature range).

For the H22, the oil grade specified by Honda that best matches the UK climate range, is 10W-40.

I have bought a set of new genuine Honda HT leads on ebay - they are in transit to me so i cant say anything about them just yet.
£25 plus £10 delivery - will take 7-10 days to get here.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Spark-Plug-C ... 2749.l2649
Hondatech guy said a lot of aftermarket leads are not as good as Honda OEM
For performance i would look at Magnecore KV85's @ around £100

Spark Plugs - just stick with NGK Platinum PZFR6-11 although some are using the iridium ones but they dont last as long as platinum

Oil - 10w-40 or 5w-30 - i used to go any old 10w-40 semi synth but now prefer 5w-30 fully synth but thats just what i prefer - anytime i put it in to Honda they used 10w-40 ;)

Col Pack is made by TEC part number TC-08A - you can see the part number on the black casing - so you can go on ebay and probably find a genuine TEC coil pack but it might be listed as aftermarket but if you can see the TC-08A in the picture then go for that. I got one off ebay for about £12 delivered. The ignitor unit is mega expensive from Honda so you might want to leave that alone unless there is definately a problem with it. Dont skimp on the dizzy cap some of the really cheap caps arent up to the job imo. I found a good quality clear dizzy cap and thats working spot on. Got a spare one if you cant find one on ebay.
