The OEM Prelude - BB8 5th Gen Motegi - p15 new photos

I'm so glad I came across this thread!

Firstly, what a fantastic job you have done to keep this beauty on the road. Huge respect.

I picked up my first Lude a few weeks back having dreamed of getting one as a 20 year old in the 90's. 88k, good history, everything works, mot until May 20.

My Motegi is OEM from what I can tell so far, and seems to have some of the same issues yours did that will need sorting.

It's in pretty good condition as it is, but has some tiny bubbling on the rear arches which I hope to rub down to metal and treat.

The rocker needs repainting, heat shield sorting etc.
I've bought a full Bilt Hamber rust proofing kit and will get under the car to treat any last piece of rust I can see.

I live in Lancaster an have a Honda dealership here, so I was thinking of doing what you did and make a long list of everything I want doing, get some quotes to possibly break the jobs up into sections to get done as and when I can. I'm hoping they will be as accomodating as the one you used in York!

I'm just starting on my Lude journey, and hope to make some shows one day. Having seen yours has really inspired me to get it done right. I always planned to keep it OEM and that's definitely what I plan to do now.

I may fire some questions your way as I go if that's ok. Any advice will always be listened to and gratefully received.

Thanks again for sharing!

No problem at all, and thank you for the comments, much appreciated.

Your Motegi looks very tidy indeed, with an intact Motegi badge!

Hopefully the photos show up, trying to share via Google Photos.

Last time I updated was just after JAE, 2019.

Since then:

Pretty much the last part that I wanted for the Lude, courtesy of a broken 5th and @Lankysod07

So before:

And after at a COVID safe Mimms meet:

The Leaky Boot?

Thought it best to check earlier this year, and found it a little damp. Nothing serious but some ingress.

Image

Removed the boot seal and found it full of crud and muck, so much so that it was no longer sealing and allowing water to track up and over into the boot. Also the corner section where the rubber seal fits was rusty.

Image

Rubbed down and treated the rust with some Bilt Hamber stuff.

Image

Thoroughly cleaned the inside of the rubber seal to remove all the muck. I also then used this stuff:

Image

Used this to line the inside of the rubber seal and then mounted back into position. I then drenched the car from all angles, with boot closed of course. This was where I thought the leak coming from:

Image

The seals around the lights appear fine, though I'm tempted to get them changed, I know it's a common spot to start leaking.

Whilst the boot carpet was out I kinda went to town on the Dynax and sprayed around all the various edges:

And dried:

All back in place and so far the boot has remained dry.

Cleaning Up

One area I knew I had neglected to take care of was under the cowling, or whatever it's called:

Image

Removed the plastic fastenings and hoped I'd not find a rusty mess.

Image

Image

I was amazed at how much mud and bits of old leaves had accumulated.

Ray got out the vacuum cleaner:

Cleaned it all up

There was some superficial rust, but, nothing rotten. Rubbed down/rust treated and more Dynax.

Then to the cowel:

I applied a few months ago and it's held it's blackness, no sign of fading so far.

After using some Meguiars Plastix on the door seals and cleansing fluid I then used the Black WOW on the door seals:

They again have held the black quite well, but, still prone to rain marks.

The interior hasn't really aged as such, seats need taking care of though, old leather now.

Finished the clean up with my favoured Bilt Hamber FINIS wax.

After the clean up I took the car out to try and get some good photos:

Some good little jobs done there and top pics as usual

Regarding the trims in the rear quarter windows, did yours ever go bad in the first place? Or were they just faded?

They did get a little faded, some pitting, they probably weren't that far gone. Always seem to need attention though.
Years ago had to use Autosol metallic polish, that helped a lot, now it's mainly upkeep.
