BB1 Scrapyard Dog - Big Ass Radiator

Post by Vtecmec » Sun Jul 07, 2024 7:19 pm

Nice, it's a good rad but annoying how it does not fit properly with the stock fans and crossmember. Particularly since its advertised as a straight swap. :?

When I fitted mine, I had read that the supplied rad cap are prone to failure, so I swapped it out, just make sure you keep your eye on it.

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - Big Ass Radiator

Cheers bud - it is same dimensions as the koyo that I had in my old BB4. It seems to be similar quality...
but as you say its a pain it doesnt fit oem fans - I had spoken to Mishimoto about this and they said it must be set up for usdm fans...and i could send it back if i didnt want to fit it. Still it was only £30 for 12" slimline fan and the extra fitting brackets. I chose to use the brackets rather than mount the fan directly onto the rad - hopefully its the right choice. :)

Thanks for the heads up on the rad cap - I will keep any eye on it

Hmmm the rad seems to be red hot - Ive bought another slimline fan to add to the mix.
Think im going to have to take this rad out fit another fan to it and check to see if they are working ok.
I might mount both of the fans to the core rather than using extension brackets. This may help with clearance on the bottom rail where the bolt heads are hitting. :?

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - Big Ass Radiator

I chopped about 4-5mm off the lower fan studs, which gave it the necessary clearance so as to not touch the crossmember.

How flush to the rad is the fan at the moment? Any gap between the two will affect performance massively.

Yes there is a gap of about 1 to 1.5 inches - so prob best mount them onto the core but as it is 52mm thick triple core it may not be too easy :? how did you mount your fans?

I've got a pretty good uprated fan on mine, I had a cheap one previously and it didn't cut it.

Thats helpful info - thanks you.
Offset brackets to close the gap and 5mm off bottom studs :)
I have two 12" 80watt fans which along with the bigger rad should help keep temps down.
Im hoping that will be ok - Im not turbo or tuned

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New headlights

Post by vanzep » Tue Sep 24, 2024 6:18 pm

finally got two fans fitted onto the mishimoto rad so all is good there :)
next up was fix up the headlights - they are jdm one piece plastic lens and need sanded, polished and sealed every year or so :x

think i left it a bit late so they had to come off so I can do a proper resto on them.
Image

I had a bit of difficulty deciding what to fit on the car in the meantime
Image

Finally went for ukdm black backed glass lens ones - they give off so much more light than the jdm ones
Image

It took a few hours to get everything back in place and bolted up but this will pay off as the darker months approach.
Thanks to Merlin for giving me a hand with this job.

I'd be genuinely surprised if there's any difference in fans for the USDM market???
