My mate had the same dilemma. With a bit of carefull research he settled on a Saab 9-3 Aero for £2800 with 66k miles.

Yeah, my dad had one from brand new in 2003 as a company car. The engine blew up after just 10 days!! They flew the chief engine designer over from Japan and everything to see why (in case there was a recall needed I imagine) but couldn't find a reason. Fitted a brand new engine and was absolutely fine for the 3 years after that, but all it did was sit on the motorway and cruise along!

I bought an Accord '04 2.4 type s saloon back in february and absolutely love it, I didn't at first.... I pissed my Mrs right off cos I kept complaining that this and that were'nt like the Prelude.....

From what I've been told there's plenty of poke in the 2.0 version...

The seats are quite comfy ( difficult to gauge because I can sit in the prelude and drive all day long with out complaining), Mine are half leather so don't get to hot. Also the rear seats are uber comfortable with jobby loads of leg room.

Plenty of pockets to put stuff in, boot is an ok size but the chassis is poorly designed in relation to what size objects you can fit....

my 2.4 does 45 MPG on long motorway runs but round town on real short trips she's down to 23 mpg.

I would personally stay away form the diesel, it could have some faults and they are expensive...

I'm also a great fan of Mazda's even though I don't really know much about them, I've always liked the shape of the Mazda 6...

If they are look at a Focus sized car, the smaller family car, then they should be looking at mazda 3, honda civic and toyota corolla sized jap cars ?

They share a lot of chassis parts, but believe me - there is very little Vectra left after the Saab boys are done! They drive and feel completely different, and only one is elk proof

for drokk sake dont let them get a focus! my mum has a 2006 1.6 focus (worth about 3k now) with 55k on the clock, the car has been literally cherished as it was the first new car my mum and dad have ever been able to afford, for the past few months they have gone through HELL with it because the core plugs in the head have been replaced 3 times now by ford costing a properly stupid amount of cash and this is a "common problem"

please mate, dont let them do it!! my mum and dad feel like just giving the drokking thing away they are so stressed out/fed up with it

Bit irrelevant but my neighbour had a Micra. The weird little one, barely used cos she's ancient and has drokked hips (32k on the clock) and she advertised it for sale, some guy pressured her into selling it... for 60 quid
