its no good for seals in the older fuel systems.

the reason they use it must be becaue of "emmisions" and "oil is running out" **cough cough bullshutarinio

I didn't realise they were making all petrol 10% ethanol, I thought they just had to offer a compliant petrol. I really hope everything isn't going to be drokking 10% ethanol, as I have 2 cars running on carbs - carbs and moisture in fuel do not mix. drokking eco kebabs ruining it for everyone as per probably

Doesn't more ethanol content mean we can tune for more power?

Tuning a H22 from 'gasoline' to E85 in the US gives about 30 extra ponies without any other mods!

Ethanol has more potential energy and burns more efficiently. But it will make the engine run lean as its changes the fuel ratio due to having more oxygen in ethenol.

Not sure what you mean by that Ratty.

Yes ethanol has a higher octane so will burn better at higher compression (so yeah to a point more efficient), but aside from that what else is there?

When comparing pure ethanol to petrol, you need somewhere in the region of 30-40% more ethanol to output the same energy value as petrol. Which also means that the CO2 output of ethanol is much higher too. That doesn't scream more efficient to me.

A blended version, however you look at it, will not perform the same as petrol in terms of efficiency MPG wise. This is fine if you don't care about MPG, but then also consider the ethanol-water affinity... this reduces the shelf life of the fuel and is worse for the fuel system and your engine IMO.

Also, Preludes are not E10 compatible.

Found this just now from Honda themselves (http://engines.honda.com/parts-and-supp ... mendations):
Using fuels with percentages of ethanol or methanol higher than 10% (E10) will cause starting and/or performance problems. It can also damage metal, rubber, and plastic fuel system components that are not covered under the Distributor’s Limited Warranty.

Ethanol has 28% less energy density than gasoline, so it reduces fuel efficiency. Ethanol contains less energy value than petrol. In theory, some loss of power and fuel economy (possibly 2-3%) may occur when using E10 fuel.

Ethanol is an excellent solvent, drying agent and cleanser. It will clean or dissolve some parts of, and deposits in, fuel storage and fuel delivery systems, including some fuel tank materials. The dissolved material can clog filters or pass through and leave deposits on fuel injectors, fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulators, carburetor jets, intake tracts, valves, and valve guides.

In addition, ethanol in the gasoline attracts water. Initially it mixes with the ethanol, but at higher concentrations it separates and settles to the lowest point, which leads to corrosion and starting and running problems. The lower the fuel level in the tank, the more likely you will experience water contamination.

E85 is an alternative fuel. It is not gasoline. It is made by combining 85% ethanol with 15% gasoline. Honda engines are not currently certified or designed to run on E85 or any other alternative fuel.
The only Honda vehicles that are ethanol fuel compliant up to E10 are:

Accord 2003 onwards
Accord Euro 2003 onwards
City 2009 onwards
Civic Range 2004 onwards
CR-V 2003 onwards
CR-Z 2011 onwards
Insight 2004 onwards
Integra 2004 onwards
Jazz 2004 onwards
Legend 2007 onwards
MDX 2003 onwards
Odyssey 2004 onwards
S2000 2004 onwards

Fair enough your Prelude may run on E10, but it's not meant to :?

maybe, just maybe its another (sneaky) way of putting the price of fuel up, if you get less mpg then its the same isnt it?

Maybe my neighbours have lobbied the EU to pass this in order to make me get rid of my cars, as none of them are compatible with E10

Joking aside it's very unfair, there are loads of people who can't afford new cars - why should they be mandated to run fuel in their cars that will ultimately cause expensive failures?

To me it just rings of being another poorly thought out scheme to allow self serving environmentalists to pat themselves on the back for 'saving the world' and making life harder for the every day folks :(
