No problem jumping in mate. The tensioners do fail, have failed and will always fail if they leak ect. Now if you look on my build thread, the one in my motor has leaked oil everywhere and the boot spring is dislodged and boot twisted. Now Imo this is fecked beyond use.. Now i would quite happily use a new auto tensioner, but as i am tracking mine, i will not want, nor trust a auto tensioner under prolonged intensive use. :x . If yours has done high miles, and is a daily dosser then put a new oem auto tensioner in. :D

I've a Vtec Direct manual tensioner fitted to my ATR and have no issues with it. 8-)

I didn't really like the fact that the h23 tensioner is really only held in place by the tension in the bolt holding it to the block, the arm section doesn't bolt to anything so could come lose and adjust itself!

Btw I've been running a new genuine auto tensioner since 2010 and you won't drive it harder than me, I've never had to even inspect it. IMO they fail because they are reused rather than replaced. I think they should be changed at every cambelt renewal?

ok valid points guys. I have held off ordering a h23 kit atm :? I am thinking about the vtec direct unit tbh. But I did also talk to my w/shop foreman about it and he said that a new auto tensioner should not cause any trouble. I really am undecided now. :x

If you're running standard cams & springs, a new auto tensioner will be fine for 50-70k miles (or buy my one that's done only a few thousand before the balance shaft seal went so I stripped and rebuilt).

I decided to go for the h23 setup when I got big cams and stiff springs because it puts a lot more stress on the part and there is less clearance between the engine internals in case it begins to fail. But fitting the cambelt on the h23 setup was so tight I don't think it would have even been possible if the engine wasn't out of the car.

No I haven't sorted myself out yet selling all my parts etc. Still getting through boxes after moving house plus a new baby! Message me if you want it I think I know where it is. There's the auto tensioner which I had fitted by Honda, (I've got the invoice and can tell you exactly how many miles it has done), and I've also got a modified assembly if you're interested that basically you can set so even if the auto tensioner fails, the cambelt can't go so slack as to cause damage. One of a kind I think!

Haha thx mate. Last year was by far the most stressful of our lives and I'm still getting over it all to be honest! But the little one is great, funny how they change absolutely everything!

There's a pic of the assembly in my build thread. 8 pictures up from the bottom here - http://preludeuk.forumup.com/viewtopic.php?t=46831
