FAIL!!



I knew I'd have trouble, so I first went to the professionals.
They told me that the heating process they use would cause bubbles to seep out of the metal underneath the coating, so it was back to DIY.

I tried painting the Rustins on but it left brush marks, so I put it into my airbrush.
I managed to get an even coat over all the wheels but it left them with a matt finish.
Once they'd dried, I found that it could be scratched off really easily.

I thought that maybe If I sprayed a layer of aerosol lacquer over the top, that would seal it in.

WRONG!!

It started to peel off. Luckily I'd only done one of the wheels with this.

So.....I've had to re-work all the wheels back up to the polished stage.
This is how I'm going to leave them.
I'll see how they fare over the Winter. They may need polishing occasionally.
I'm going to use some Chemical Guys Jetseal on them just for a layer of protection and then get the tyres fitted.

I'll post some pictures up once they're fitted.

Nice one Jay. I'll see if I can get some of that.
The trouble is, I need to fit these wheels ASAP. I'll have to apply the stuff with the wheels on the car.

Well fit the wheels, see how it goes while you wait for the stuff. Either way, when it arrives just remove the wheels one by one, give them a quick polish again and apply the wax/Luster seal. It shouldn't take too long to apply whatever you're using.

I'm thinking the wax might be a better idea, thinking ahead and having to order more.

*Edit* I found some Luster Seal on ebay at an inflated price. I bought it anyway as it was a UK seller.

They looked quite nice like this, but the finish really wasn't durable enough.

DONE & FITTED!!

They’re done and fitted, just in time for the rainy season.
I bought some Luster Seal (thanks Jay), and applied it to the wheels once the tyres were fitted.
The tyres I bought on-line from Camskill and are Uniroyal RainExpert 205/55/15.

The Luster Seal seems like quite a good product. It was easy to apply and removed all the grubby fingerprints. It appeared to leave a protective coating and gave a deeper shine too.
I have to apply it once a month though just to keep the wheels looking their best.

As a finishing touch I bought and attached some chavtastic decals.
