Well I've done the salt for sugar switch before with amusing results, I'm wondering how well a silica gel for sugar switch will work... don't worry, I'm not planning on changing my childrens diet to kitty litter!!

Any form of dessicant will be a respiratory irritant. Dessicant + pulmonary surfactant = mad surface tension and alveolar collapse. By extension it makes sense that it would have a similar effect on the digestive organs. Like impaction in reptiles.

Might give that a miss then, I don't particularly want to kill anyone at the moment...

I agree with lll, buy commercial stuff rather than the pre-boxed stuff from Halfords. It kept my 3g cabin boot and interior dry whilst travelling the far east. Or.. if someone is in attendance whilst you are away, buy a small commercial electric dehumidifier, but the drip tray will need emptying from time to time. I think you may be able to buy small ones from Machine Mart. Cat -litter is also good, but a bit messy from a merchandising point of view. And its best, in any case, not to allow the liquid collected by any of the above methods, to overflow onto your carpet (s) it'll be their ruination.

How appropriate that ruination is an anagram of urination, given that we're discussing cat litter and liquids.
