Alternators...

Post by JohnnyB » Wed Jun 10, 2015 8:58 pm

Sooo... Has anyone tried converting a 5g OBD-II alternator to fit a 4g OBD-I ?

I ordered a Lucas alternator for £86.99, advertised to fit a '96 4g VTEC. It arrived today and it's got the square OBD-II connector not the round OBD-I  Everything else *appears* to be identical.

Now since I can't find the correct alternator for less than twice the price I paid I've gone and ordered this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLTAGE-ALTER ... 0300&rt=nc

The thought being I can swap the OBD-II regulator for this one and re-use the rear casing from the old alternator to make a complete new OBD-I alternator unit...

I can't think why this wouldn't work but has anyone tried it before? I'm just trying to save a few quid really

Have I missed something obvious? I haven't checked the pulley diameter but even if it's different I'll be able to swap them over... What else is there?!

how much did you pay for the alternator out of interest? I'm struggling to find them at a decent price hence this post - I didn't fancy paying for a second hand one without knowing its history

I'm pretty sure you can just swap out the voltage regulator to put a 5th gen one onto a 4th.

I've never done it though, but have read about it a few times.
