True short shift at last!!!

Post by Dbo » Sun May 20, 2012 4:23 pm

had an ebay special adapter fitted and it kept pushing the centre consol around

some nice guy on here (sorry i forgot who  before i get a kicking  ) at Japfest told me to cut the gearstick off just under the bracket and weld in a bush centre.

so did this and extended the gear stick by 1 1/4" :) it has made it short shift but threw the gear selector position foward by about 1/2"

so for a giggle put the ebay adapter back on as well and that really is nice :P whole shift is about 1/2" long into every gear but can't keep it as the cable is so high it pushes the ashtray and ciggy lighter around and you can not fit the centre consol back on at all

if you could do away with the ashtray and ciggy lighter and modify the gator hole this set up would be the nuts

will have a play till i get though as a shift that short really did feel nice :D

Short shifters are great but your beating your syncros over the head every time you change gear :(

This from the Oracle.

when fun means major gearbox work its not so fun  I have a Pspec full addaption. Its a bit shorter but on the softest setting. i spanked the red lude on its shortest setting but I'v learned

Yeah, I'm confused by this too. If the cable is still moving the same amount, how can you possibly affect the box? :?

because the cable isnt moving as much? by making the throw steeper your shortening the distance travelled at the other end. this means the syncros are only just catching.

im not a mechanic but when i told rich i would be fitting mine he explained that the shorter the throw the harder your making it for the syncromesh to work effectivly. eventually you cause undue wera on the box...

Ah right, I see. Well, that will only be an issue if the short shifter used changes the amount of cable travel. I think most of them work by changing the height of the pivot point on the stick. This allows the same amount of cable travel, but with less stick travel. Certainly with the short shifts I've used/seen the gearbox end has the exact same amount of movement.

Trying to find a diagram, without much luck! Might have to break the l33t (or l44t for JayJay) drawing skills out.
