Cat back for BB6 JDM SIR

Post by majemoss » Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:20 am

Hi all, my rear silencer has started blowing and wondered what other people have fitted on there cars. Am I correct in thinking the JDM exhaust differs in size to the UK one? I didn't want to go buying a cat back system to find out it was too long/short. I quite like the look of the standard twin exit pipes is there a stainless alternative that people recommend. Or if someone has one they want rid of just let me know :-)
Any help is great
Thanks
Mark

I'm not 100% on regular JDM 5G exhausts. I would assume that the downpipe is the same length all other non-ATTS Ludes, we know the CAT is smaller, so that would make the mid section longer to compensate. Axle-back (backboxes) are the same for all 5G's bar the Type-S/S-SPEC (2.25" diameter Vs the regular 2.0").

I think you would find it difficult to find an off the shelf exhuast for the SIR. I would get a custom exhaust made up. That way you can choose your own diameter and backbox style.

Cheers for the great info Merlin, I might have to look down the custom route then. What diameter pipe
would be more beneficial, the same as the Type-S or slightly bigger? I'd be looking for something that increases performance slightly but doesn't sound too noisy. Slightly louder than standard would be ideal.

It depends on what mods you have and if you have any ECU tuning IMO. Probably 2.5" max? Are you keeping the CAT in place?

Yeah I was thinking of keeping the cat in place, at the moment its just a standard setup and will probably keep it that way for now. I'm thinking of fitting an Type-S intake and cat back for the time being.
Like you say looking around online most people recommend 2.5" for a standard setup, its not blowing bad but its MOT time in September so trying to get on top of it before then really.

The section of pipe between the cat and small front box on my mongoose is adjustable in length.
I've assumed this is to adapt to the two cat lengths or am I talking bollox and they're all like it?
Not had a chance to look at any other systems up close.

If its just the Type-S exhaust he has at them moment, the exhaust may be too long. The S has a longer downpipe and bigger CAT than the SIR.
