Please regurgitate all your 4g and 5g 4ws knowledge here!

Post by NFrank89@gmail.com » Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:31 pm

Hello from America everyone! you guys seem to have a very informative site here and im looking forward to soaking up as much information as possible! I'll share what I can as well.

So, what brings me here today? Well, I've been trying to unlock new doors with the 4th and 5th gen's over here. seems new development has come to a bit of a stop so I've been working at figuring out some new tricks!

idk if anyone here has seen it but I've successfully rewired and installed a full 5th gen ABS system in one of my 92' 4th gens which ended up being 9.072kg in weight reduction and increased the overall functionality of the system. I also just finished converting my other 92' 4ws to full SH (comparable to whatever trim you guys have that uses ATTS) brakes, steering, and suspension which I don't believe anyone has ever done before! still waiting on new wheels, tires, and alignment before I test drive it though.

my next target is the 4ws system.
I'm looking to breathe a bit more life into it and see if I can actually get better response and aggression out of it so it may actually be useful for autocross. i wanted to get some info about the 5th gen 4ws because im trying to determine which unit would be a better platform for modification whether it be software mods or tweaking the inputs and outputs of the control unit.

I've tried to do some research but I've found pretty much nothing about tweaking the 4ws... I would have figured that some nerd like myself would have come along already and tried to goof around with the 4ws but I've found NOTHING. anyways... after speaking with Nitin he told there is a ukdm prelude service manual here somewhere that covers the 5th gen 4ws system. I NEED to see this so I can look over the wiring diagrams and such. does anyone happen to know where I can find that?

my next question is... it seems many of you have issues with the 4ws system. what are those issues exactly?

has anyone done a comparison between the 4th and 5th gen 4ws systems functionality wise? does the 5th gen system seem more responsive? less? identical?

does anyone have pictures of the electronic steering rack and control unit from all angles?

does anyone have the electronic steering rack, 4ws unit, and possibly even the harness sitting around/ for sale?!

and last but not least has anyone been able to compare the 4th and 5th gen racks visually? are they identical?

answers are greatly appreciated :)

Welcome to LG!! I have seen your ABS thread on PerludePower.

There isnt a UKDM 5th gen service manual. We use the same USDM manual that you guys do, as such it doesnt have any 4WS info in it. We have to revert to the 4G service manual for 4WS info.

Seen the ABS thread on PP too - awesome job on that. 8)

I'm pretty sure there is a 5th GEN UKDM manual, I have the '99 supplement, so a '97 main manual must exist!

Yeah, I've got a few now, other generations too. Just difficult to scan it all in. I have these, all my Prelude and Mugen brochures and catalogues to do to. Not sure if there is any 4WS stuff in there, I'd imagine it would be in the main 97 one though.

i really appreciate your responses guys! nucleustylzlude, if you could look for me and possibly scan all the 5th gen 4ws pages throughout the different sections, all the reset procedures, wiring diagrams, and system descriptions. i would be so grateful! i'd be willing to pay if that would motivate you since i know scanning pages is a very boring task :) in fact, if you wanted i would be more than happy to scan the whole manual to a pdf so everyone could benefit but i guess you'd have to trust me and that's up to you lol. i'd pay the shipping and ship it back when done!

Again, let me know if anyone is willing to sell and ship a 5th gen 4ws unit, even better would be if i could get it with the plugs/harness :D perhaps you know someone who is parting one out ("breaking" i believe is what you guys call it?) and wouldnt mind letting go of the harness?

no matter what at least SOME useful information will come of all this that everyone can benefit from.

my very first concept should give us the ability to safely turn 4ws on and off when you want. people have pulled the fuse but the wheels wobbled all over. so they just pull the rack. well... instead of pulling the fuse lets use a relay to interrupt the signal from the steering angle sensor and switch to a resistor that matches the resistance that the sensor reports when the wheels are pointed straight ahead? this way the rack remains energized and holds the wheels steady in the forward position. how come no one has thought of that yet?! so simple. i havent had a chance yet to dive into the 4ws diagrams and see if there is anything preventing me from doing this but i'll report back in a new development thread when i have an answer.
