Cracked Manifold

Post by vanzep » Tue Oct 23, 2012 12:23 pm

I noticed the other day that my radiator had been spraying coolant onto the manifold and alternator so after replacing the radiator i decided to have a look at the manifold as i could see some soot deposits and it sounds like its blowing.
Unfortunately ive heat wrapped the manifold sothat had to be cut off first - which was a pain to do.
This revealed a crack around the base of no.1 pipe. Ive put some gun gum on it but this is just a temporary fix until i get a new manifold - im thinking of upgrading if i can get enough cash together.
Currently im suffering from pre MOT nerves as it due at the end of the month.
To top it all off i got a shock off the new KV85 leads - it was enough to just about stall the car - and its blown a side marker light - however the shock seems to have given me a bit of a jump start
surely you shouldnt get a shock from the leads if you just brush against them at the disit cap..... :?

How ugly is the old OEM manifld?

They should be insulated so I wouldn't have thought so. Have a closer look at the boots etc (with the engine off obviously  ) to see if there are any splits in them and the surrounding wire. If you have access to a garage then put it in there when its dark and see if you can spot any arcing etc.

Could it have been from the heat from the wrap causing the weld to fracture?

I've been told that wrapping the OEM manifold will cause it to crack. :geek:

Yes so i heard but as usual decided that i knew better
mind u did forget to tighten the bolts that hold the mani to the block so there was a bit more movement there and i have hit a few potholes.....

On the KV85s - No the boots are fine - my hands were covered in coolant so that might have had something to do with it - i need someone else to test it (3rd gen steve or merlin) to see if it gives them a shock as well :) as i say it was enough nearly to stall the car...

I have a spare OEM manifold from my 5g, should fit if you can't get the cash for an upgrade. Don't want much for it, PM me if you're interested ;)

I heard wrapping any exhaust manifold makes it more likely to crack :ugeek:
