Gearbox oil change

Post by Donald » Sun Oct 06, 2013 11:02 am

I was thinking the Prelude could do with a bit of a freshen up as I've not changed the gearbox oil and I probably should!

Box is currently on ~125k and doesn't crunch any gear. I'm not sure what oil is currently in there although I would assume it'd be Honda MTF.

So my question is, just draining the box and refilling with Honda MTF shouldn't present a problem? Or would a full change be preferable? IIRC the box holds around 2L but the whole system is closer to 6, so quite a price difference especially if a switch to Torco or Amsoil is the answer.

The manual gearbox only holds 2.2 quarts of fluid. It needs only 2 quarts for a fluid change. A quart is 0.94L.

And yes Honda MTF, Torco MTF, or Amsoil MTF are the 3 you should choose from. I have found Amsoil to be good and have used it for many years.

Changing the fluid is easy. Always slacken the filler bolt before you empy the old fluid ;) once the car is jacked up all you need is a bit of hose an a funnel. As soon a fluid comes out of the filler hole the gearbox is full. Two bottles of Amsoil is the exact amount needed.

+1

Don't drain the box without making sure you can fill it back up! Fill back up with the aid of a long hose from the engine bay.

Cheers chaps 8-)

Went for Amsoil from Opie Oils in the end, worked out only a tenner more (inc. delivery) than Honda MTF from Cox Motor Parts, even with 20% off. So why not I says.

EDIT: Fecking forgot about the LG discount
